Yarm Town Council

In 2007 James Wharton decided to take over the council by nominating eleven conservative candidates nine were successful and Yarm Independent Association with 100% success took two seats. The first meeting in May 2007 was the AGM when they took all committees and chairmanships. They did not know what to do and thought they could do anything without taking legal precautions.

The chairman became Mayor of Yarm almost instantly and it became evident that this title was most important to him. He promised people a car park for Yarm without realising that the allotments would be an unpopular location.

They did not realise that allotments had to be released by Government North East and that this process could take thirty years and still be doomed to failure.

December 2008 two vacancies occurred one due to resignation and the other due to lack of attendance. Again in 2009 another vacancy due to lack of attendance.
Two elections cost the town approximately £17000. James Wharton insistedthat an election take place as jt was good practice for his parliamentary election.

The main areas of work are the cemetery, the allotments and recreation.

Stockton Tory MP's bid to get cash for his pal

A NEW Tory MP tried to help a former Conservative colleague who sells giant penis statues get £30,000 in Government aid.

Stockton South MP James Wharton is facing criticism after he wrote to jobs quango One North East asking them to speed up a grant to Trocabart, a company run by his former Conservative party pal Jason Hadlow.

The newly elected MP asked spending chiefs to hand over £30,000 as “a priority” to his mate whose other company Simply Dutch was at the centre of a media storm earlier this year when police seized a four-foot tall sandstone statue of a penis following indecency complaints.

Mr Hadlow, a former chairman of Yarm’s Conservative Association and now an independent councillor, hopes to create dozens of jobs in Teesside by expanding the secondhand goods market. To help his business plans, Mr Hadlow asked One North East for a grant but soon hit a problem after the Conservative party nationally ordered the development agency to freeze business support.

As the cuts began to bite, Mr Wharton contacted One North East in June saying he had met with the firm and wanted to know why it hadn’t been given any cash yet. The MP had campaigned against the need for a jobs agency in the run up to the General Election. When spending chiefs explained to him that they were powerless to act because his own party had ordered a freeze, Mr Wharton took the issue to Parliament and asked written questions to the Department for Business in July to see when the grants would be freed up again.

Mr Wharton has said his only concern was to help bring more jobs to Teesside. There has been no suggestion of any financial connection between the MP and the firm.

But last night Labour accused Mr Wharton of hypocrisy. Nick Brown, the former regional minister and leading advocate of One North East, said: “This project would have been eligible for support under the last Labour government. It is the Conservative Government that has suspended the payments. It’s hypocritical for a Conservative MP to demand special treatment for one particular company that is run by the former chair of his constituency party.”

A spokesman for the development agency said no legal contract has been completed. He said: “Until a legal contract is completed and the conditions of that contract are met by the grant applicant, no payments are released.”

Yarm Allotments Under Threat

Yarm Allotments Under Threat - Car Parking on Allotment Land

Stockton Borough Council have printed a leaflet WITH AN ATTACHED VOTING SLIP to be delivered to all dwellings in Eaglescliffe and Yarm proposing three options for a Yarm Car Park.

Option 1    Land behind Yarm Medical Centre
Option 2    Worsall Road allotments
Option 3    Land to the east of the cemetery

Please Note

We believe that the Stockton Council leaflet may mislead our residents.

We also object to Eaglescliffe voting on the demise of our allotment land.

Late Night Economy

Statistics show that with an extension of hours in the Entertainment sector of the economy, incidents that are drink related also increase proportionately.

When all the Public Houses closed at 11.00pm in Yarm ,there was a queue for taxi services that cleared the High Street by 11.20pm.Instead of staggering the permitted hours Stockton BC Licensing Committee should have adhered to Police requests for all outlets to close at 12.00pm. We would then not have to experience the disgraceful sight of drunks staggering on the High Street, and vomiting and urinating down any convenient side street in the early hours.

The residents of Yarm have been let down badly by ill thought out legislation by the previous government, and by lily livered members of the licensing committee.

Yarm High Street

Although there is an enormous car park in Yarm High Street we have often thought that although there is an abundance of motor cars there does not seem to be an abundance of people walking on the High Street.   Shops are not full, although Boyes do have more customers than other shops but even they are not bulging at the seams with customers.

Willey Flatts Regeneration Group

marjorie simpson yarm town councilSince May 2005 Marjorie Simpson has continued to work with the WFFRG raising £170,000 from various grant funding bodies.  Stockton Council Officers have been very supportive giving the group confidence to continue on even though sometimes members of the group became quite impatient for it all to fall into place.    We now have a completed scheme of which we are all very proud.  Many thanks to Jennifer, Nigel, Pat, Mavis, Rosemary, Tui, Bev and Ann who has now moved out of the area but was still interested enough to return and take part in our August opening event.   On behalf of the group thanks must go to Yarm Town Council who have funded a monthly litter pick and paid for extra grass cutting to take place over the summer months.

The group is now beginning a new project to raise funding for streamline and up to date Play Equipment for all ages.  The Town Council has provided £12,000 for fencing to surround  the play area that is a Health and Safety requirement.

Snaith's Field

The Town Council has money ring fenced for further equipment to be installed in Snaiths Field.     It would seem that this area is becoming more popular than in previous years and at present we are consulting residents as to the type of equipment children would like to have access to here.   At present £7500 is available should the cost of the equipment exceed this amount we will have to suggest that the extra funding be included in the next council budget of January 2011.
